Lobo WBB Signs Two for 2024-25
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Lobo women’s basketball program has signed two more to the 2024-25 roster with two guards in Lydie Mwamba and Joana Magalhães.
“Lydie is a big, athletic guard who can put it on the floor and get it at the rim,” commented head coach Mike Bradbury. “She is a really good three-point shooter who knows how to play and has a chance to be a great defender. We can’t wait for her to get here.”
“Joana is a quick ball-handling point guard who knows how to control the game,” added Bradbury. “She is a good three-point shooter and we’re excited to see how she develops as a Lobo.”
Lydie Mwamba | Guard | 5-11 | Republic Democratic of Congo
Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mwamba comes to UNM from Trinity Valley Community College, where she spent the last two seasons.
During her time in Athens, Texas at TVCC, she was named NJCAA Second Team All-American and Second Team All-Conference. In her freshman season, Mwamba averaged 4.7 points per game, shooting 44.4% from the floor and averaged 12.1 minutes per game in 34 games with 10 starts. She made a significant jump her sophomore season, starting in all 33 games, and averaged 16.9 points per game, shot 47.9% and improved her rebounding to 6.8 boards a game from 2.2 her freshman season, going from 76 to 225 total rebounds. In addition, she averaged 1.1 steals per game (from 0.5 as a freshman) and 0.4 blocks per game (from 0.2 as a freshman) in her most recent season.
Prior to attending Trinity Valley, she attended Hyde School in Maine and Coventry Christian School in Pennsylvania, where she was a two-time champion and accumulated 1000 points, was named two-time player of the year, a First Team All-American and a Second Team All-American during her high school career.
Mwamba speaks five languages (French, English, Lingala, Swahili and Tshiluba) and intends to major in business management at UNM.
Joana Magalhães| Guard | 5-5 | Lisbon, Portugal
From Portugal, Magalhães played for CRC Quinta Dos Lombos, where they won the national championship in 2023-24. She also won a championship while at Quinta Do Marquês in 2021-22.
On why New Mexico: In short, the best decision I’ve ever made. They were incredible to me, they have an extraordinary and comfortable environment where I can be myself, and the coaches, the entire staff are so friendly. Not to mention some of the teammates I met, they were incredible to me! And in the end, after seeing “THE PIT” I fell in love immediately.
The duo joins Destinee Hooks, Clarissa Craig, and Amhyia Moreland as offseason signings.
