Brodie Young to Represent Team GB at World Athletics Relays May 4-5

New Mexico’s Brodie Young is set to represent Great Britain on the international stage at the World Athletics Relays this weekend at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, where he’ll compete on the mixed 4x400m relay squad.

Young – one of eight male British athletes selected for the 4x400m – will make his fourth appearance for Team GB in international competition and second at the senior level as the British seek to build off a bronze finish in the event at World Championships in 2023 and secure one of 14 Olympic places that are up for grabs this weekend in the Bahamas.

He’ll be running the first leg of the mixed 4x400m tomorrow in Heat 3 (Lane 4), set to get underway at 5:27 p.m. MT. The top two teams in each heat qualify for the Olympics this summer and for Sunday’s final.

The Glasgow, Scotland native made his senior team debut as part of the mixed 4x400m relay last June at European Team Championships and also represented Great Britain at the U23 level last July at European U23 Championships, where his 4x400m relay squad won bronze with a 3:03.12 finish. He won gold in the 4x400m at European U20 Championships in 2021 and his mixed relay finished fourth at the same championships in August 2022.

Brodie Young's last international competition as part of a Great Britain 4x400m relay squad that secured Bronze at U23 Euro Championships last July.

“I am really pleased with the strength of the team that will be traveling to Nassau,” said Darren Campbell, Great Britain’s Head of Sprints, Hurdles & Relays. “The 4x400m squads have a 100% medal record from Budapest to uphold and this event is the first step towards that aim.

“Our lead 4x400m relay coach Martyn Rooney obviously has a lot of experience in bringing the best out of these teams and I’m looking forward to seeing those athletes step up at the Championships.”

Team GB sits at third on the all-time track & field table with 194 medals – including 53 golds – with the United States out in front with 767 medals.

Young will have a quick turnaround after getting back from the Bahamas – he’ll be counted on to score points when Mountain West Outdoor Championships get started next Thursday in Clovis, Calif.

The Lobos’ top men’s 400m runner, Young’s 46.15 season best at the Bobcat Invitational on March 29th ranks No. 1 in the Mountain West and No. 39 in the nation – he’s already secured himself a surefire place in NCAA Prelims for the West Region, where that time ranks 18th. Along with Victor Akhalu, Tim Harris and Levente Soos, Young is also a crucial leg for UNM’s 4x400m relay squad that posted a 3:12.93 time last weekend at the Arizona Desert Heat Classic, good for third-fastest in the conference this season. He’ll also compete in the 200m, in which he’s ranked 11th (21.22).
