COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - The Lobos, despite the loss to Wyoming 7-0 on neutral ground, played well today by putting themselves in a position to win. The Lobos will next travel to Boise, Idaho for a two-day weekend against conference opponents Nevada * and Fresno State * before heading back to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the Mountain West Championship.
The day started off in favor of the Cowgirls as they swiftly took the doubles point.
They gained some momentum after winning number two 8-3 and then proceeded to take numbers one and three with a score of 8-5.
With the doubles point in the Cowgirls' hands, the Lobos looked to singles to shake things up.
At number one singles, Michaela Bezdickova won the first set in a close matchup 6-4 but fell in a close second set 7-5. The two played a third set tiebreak in which Wyoming got the edge over Bezdickova by winning the match with a final score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).
At number six singles, Laura Richardson won her first set 6-2 but Wyoming's Silviya Zhelyazkova answered back by taking the second set 6-3. The two were forced to play a third set tiebreak and were neck-and-neck until the end when Zhelyazkova got the better of her winning the last two points. Wyoming won the match with a final score of 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
Wyoming did not budge as they took all six points in singles to finish the match 7-0 against UNM.
"It was a tough day for us," Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper said. "Wyoming came at us from the first point and had a little too much fire power--so credit to them on a match well played. There were a number of bright spots for us though; we competed much better across the board in doubles and in singles even if our execution wasn't the best at times. We still need to get better at implementing and sticking to our game plans."
The Lobos are now 1-5 in conference play and are 7-12 overall. The Lobos will travel to Boise, Idaho for a two-day weekend on April 20-21, 2013 against conference opponents Nevada * and Fresno State * before heading back to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the Mountain West Championship on April 25-28, 2013.
