The University of New Mexico track and field team swept the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week award. Senior Chris Barnicle and junior Ruth Senior earned the honor as a result of their outstanding performances at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford this past weekend.
Barnicle set a new personal-best in the 10,000m with a time of 28:10.59, beating his old PR (28:53.20) by over 42 seconds. The time currently ranks second in the nation and tops the MWC this season. The Newton, Mass. product finished second among collegiate racers in the event.
Senior crushed New Mexico's school record in the 3,000m steeplechase. The junior ran a time of 10:09.14 to beat out the old school record of 10:38.20 set by Kara Henry in 2008. Senior was the first collegiate finisher in the event and fifth overall. Her time currently ranks sixth in the nation this season and second in the MWC.
Top-25 rankings came out Tuesday and both the men and women have cracked the list. The men made the more drastic move of the two, coming in at No. 21 after being ranked No. 29 last week.
The women moved up one spot to No. 23. The only other MWC school in the rankings is the men of BYU at No. 11.
Next up for the Lobos: MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at home May 12-15.
