CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The University of New Mexico softball team won its fifth-straight game on Friday morning with a 6-4 victory over Southern in its opening game of the 2013 Best Western Marina Grand Islander Classic hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

The Lobos improve to 7-8 overall while the Jaguars dropped to 0-12 on the season.

New Mexico tied its season high for most hits in a game, pounding out 11. Junior Chelsea Anaya and freshman Mariah Rimmer led the Lobos at the plate.

Anaya went 2-for-3, including her first home run of the season -- a solo shot to right field in the top of the third inning. Rimmer was 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs. She hit her second dinger of the season -- also a solo long ball over the center field fence.

"It was really nice to get some power from Anaya and Rimmer," head coach Erica Beach said. "That definitely helped spark the team in future innings.

"We also had some key defensive plays lake in the game that helped to preserve the win."

Freshman Lisa Rodrigues got the start and tossed the first 3.1 innings. In 18 batters faced, she allowed four hits and three runs -- one earned while walking two and striking out one.

Senior Kari Gutierrez came in in the bottom of the fourth and threw the final 3.2 innings to pick up the win and improve to 1-2. Gutierrez also faced 18 batters and allowed four hits and one earned run while walking three and fanning four.

New Mexico has two games on Saturday as they face Auburn at 12 p.m. MT, and host Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. MT.

Lobos 6, Southern 4

The Lobos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Rimmer led off with a single through the left side, stole a base and was driven in off a grounder to third by Naomi Tellez.

The Jaguars capitalized on a UNM miscue and put up an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 1 apiece after two frames.

New Mexico reclaimed the lead in the top of the third, thanks to Anaya's homer, but Southern added a run in both the third and the fourth to lead, 3-2 heading into the fifth.

The Lobos responded with four hits in the fifth inning and put up three runs to reclaim the lead, 5-3, and this time they held on to it.

Rimmer started the rally with a single up the middle and moved to second off a sacrifice bunt by Kaity Ingram. Anaya followed, singling up the middle, and moved Rimmer to third base and then stealing second. A single through the left side by Tellez allowed Rimmer to score and then a double to left center by Cassandra Kalapsa brought Anaya and Tellez home.

The Jaguars threatened a bit in the bottom of the frame, stringing together three hits and scoring a run to make it 5-4, but Rimmer's long ball in the top of the sixth inning gave UNM some insurance, 6-4.

Southern drew two walks in the bottom of the sixth inning, but strong defense by the Lobos left Jaguars stranded.

No score by the Lobos in the top of the final inning left the score at 6-4. Southern again got two on in the bottom of the seventh, this time with a hit and a walk, but again UNM's defense came through and prevented any runs being scored.
