Hello Lobo Fans!
We traveled to Utah last week to play two conference matches; BYU and Utah. We arrived in Salt Lake City on Wednesday evening, had a great meal at Jason's Deli and spent some time outside at The Gateway Mall.
Thursday we traveled in our vans to Provo, Utah to the gymnasium of the BYU Cougars. We had a short practice and soon afterwards we began our warm up for the game. It was a tough battle that evening, leaving with our third conference loss and a ton of tears.
After a hard night, we studied in our hotel rooms on Friday after breakfast and then went to Utah's gym to have an intense practice. Later on we were given the option to go to the mall again, go to a movie, or just hang out at the hotel. That night we all met back up together and went out to dinner. Little did we know we were going to witness a proposal right in front of our table! Our hearts all burst with sudden joy, breaking the shell from our loss the previous evening.
Saturday morning we all woke up focused and ready to go. The passers and setters left a bit earlier than the rest of our team to get extra reps before the game. It was Utah's "Think Pink" match, recognizing breast cancer awareness. Our team came out in our brand new pink uniforms, excited to play. The game was so much fun, dominating the first two games. We had a rocky third game and lost, but came back in the fourth to dominate once again. Match point, Ashley Rhoades got a block that went straight down winning the game for us; first time in 13 years! The entire bench ran onto the court in full excitement!! We went to Chili's to celebrate our win, and even were allowed to have dessert!!
After a long night at the airport, delays got us home just before 1 a.m., we had rehab in the morning and then a rainbow-themed party at Lisa Meeter and Amy Wong's house. We were all assigned a certain color, had to dress in only that color and bring a food of that color. We played charades and took lots of pictures to remember the day by.
Monday's practice got us ready for one of the biggest rivalry matches of the year--New Mexico State. Tuesday we traveled to play the Aggies, only with domination on our minds. It was NMSU's "Think Pink" match, so we played again in our pink jerseys. We came out strong and focused. Even our cheerleaders and Chaparrals, as well as a fan bus full of people headed down for the big event. Battling hard and consistently, we ended up sweeping the Aggies. Ashley had another huge game ending in 10 kills and seven blocks. It has been 20 years since we have beaten them in Las Cruces. With another big win, we rushed the floor and some tears of joy were even shed.
I want to thank all of you who support us. You mean so much to our program! We are finishing off our week back at home this Saturday against UNLV. Hope to see you in the stands!
