ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico head coach Erica Perkins Jasper and assistant coach Kelcy McKenna are pleased to announce the signing of Lizette Blankers. She will be one of six outstanding athletes to join the Lobo women’s tennis team in 2013-14.

The Krimpen aan den Ijssel, Netherlands native Lizette Blankers currently attends Krimpenerwaard College High School and plays at TOC Capelle aan den Ijssel. Her highest Dutch ranking this year in singles is 62 and 91 in doubles improving her ranking significantly from a year ago when she was 120 nationally in singles and 150 nationally in doubles. She is the daughter of Anky and Jeroen Blankers. She has a one older sister, Karlijn Blankers. Some of her most recent notable accomplishments are that as a junior player, she was vice-champion at the 14 and under national championships and was ranked as high as No. 6 in the Dutch junior rankings. She plans to pursue her interest in medicine.

“We are very excited to have Lizette Blankers join the Lobo Tennis Family,” Jasper said. “Lizette is a player who has improved tremendously over 12 months—and I believe has the potential and the desire to continue to improve during her collegiate career.  She adds some good depth and experience to our freshman class.”

Blankers will be one of six to join the 2013-14 incoming freshman class for UNM. The incoming class is made up of talented tennis players consisting of Emily Olivier (Spring, Texas), Meredith Hopson (Austin, Texas), Dominique Dulski (Indio, Calif.), Rachana Bhat (Tucson, Ariz.), Susan Baklini (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Lizette Blankers (Krimpen aan den Ijssel, Netherlands).

“Coach McKenna and I are very excited about this recruiting class,” Jasper said. “Each one of these young women is extremely motivated to continue to improve both as tennis players and as students—and to put in the work required to do so on a daily basis.  They will bring a hunger and a sense of urgency to the team, and we expect all six to make an immediate impact on the court.”
