Today: Yvonne Sanchez's Lobos Sweep New Mexico State

By Richard Stevens - Senior Writer/GoLobos.com

A sweep is always a special thing. New Mexico fans love it when their Pit heroes bring out the broom and put it to work. A sweep of any team is sweet, but is there anything sweeter than twice dusting off the New Mexico State Aggies?

The Yvonne Sanchez Lobos not only did that during the 2012-13 season, but they must have used the Jolly Green Giant's broom. The Lobos -- really, the rebuilding Lobos - beat the NMSU Aggies by a combined 47 points.

The first UNM win was in The Pit, but it was still a shocker because of the score - 60-37 - and because of the dominating UNM defense. The Aggies shot 12.5 percent in the second half. It was a game in which you were tempted to give the Aggies a point if they hit the rim. There was a rumor that NMSU made a stop in Socorro on the way back to Cruces to look for the Aggies' lost shooting touch.

Bryce Owens had a big game in that win. She dished out 10 assists to become the first Lobo to reach double digit assists since the 2003-04 season. Owens had only three turnovers. Caroline Durbin had 14 points.

The rematch in Las Cruces was expected to be bit tougher. The Aggies had been embarrassed in The Pit. The Aggies had some home turf to defend.

But the score suggested that Game 2 actually was easier for UNM. The Lobos won by 24 points -- on Aggie turf.

The Aggies tried to beef up attendance for the Lobos' visit to the Pan American Center by offering free tickets to the upcoming NMSU/UNM men's game. It didn't help much as UNM quieted the Aggie crowd by slamming down a 39-22 halftime lead. UNM shot 50 percent from the floor with Durbin going 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

Coach Sanchez said her Lobos played the best game of the season up to that point in the 68-44 romp. Durbin again led UNM with 18 points, but the UNM bench also was a hero outscoring the NMSU bench 30-4. UNM also won the board battle 42-27 and NMSU went 4-of-22 from long range.

Which brings up a final question: Did Sanchez have that golden broom bronzed or does she plan to bring it out again in 2013-14?
