ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - DJ Peterson earned his fifth All-America honor Tuesday as he earned first team honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings. Mitch Garver was also honored as he was named to the second team, which is his second All-America honor this season.

For Peterson, it is his fourth first team nod, having already earned the honor by Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and PerfectGame.org. He finished his Lobo career as one of the most prolific hitters in UNM history, following a season that saw him hit .408 with 18 home runs and 72 RBI this year. He was named Co-Mountain West Player of the Year and a semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy for the second straight season.

That resulted in him being drafted 12th overall by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the MLB Draft June 6, which is the highest a Lobo has ever been selected.

Already a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, Mitch Garver earned his second All-America honor of the season. Louisville Slugger also named him to its first team after he hit .390 with six home runs and 68 RBI.

Garver, who was named a first team All-American by Louisville Slugger May 30, shared Mountain West Player of the Year honors with Peterson after hitting hitting .390 with 96 hits, which rank 16th and seventh in the nation, respectively, and are first among all NCAA catchers. His 68 RBI are tied for 8th overall and are second among backstops, as are his 21 doubles. Also, only three catchers have more triples than his five.

He also set a new UNM record for consecutive starts this season. He started every game each of the last three seasons and ended his Lobo career with 181 straight starts. He also had a 26-game hitting streak, sixth longest at UNM, recorded at least one hit in all but six games this season, and failed to reach base in only three contests.

The end result was he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the ninth round of the MLB Draft, and for the second straight year he is one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, which is given to the top catcher in the nation. The winner will be announced at the 16th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27.

Both Peterson and Garver were also named to the ABCA All-Midwest Region first team. UNM was one of only three schools, along with Illinois State and Kansas State, to have two players on the first team.
