University of New Mexico junior Manon De Roey birdied the first playoff hole to win the individual title at the Mountain West women's golf championships in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Playing the par-5, 521-yard 18th hole, De Roey rolled in an uphill 20-footer for the dramatic victory over UNLV's Demi Mak. Both players finished 54 holes at 7-over 223 at the Mission Hills Country Club's Dinah Shore Course (par 72, 6,234 yards).

In the playoff, De Roey and Mak both found the right rough off the tee. They laid up and had 100 yards to the flag. De Roey left her approach shot under the hole while Mak was long and had a tough downhill putt. Mak missed her birdie attempt.

"It feels really good," said De Roey of the victory. "I was a little down for three tournaments before Fresno (April 15-16), but I played pretty well there and that helped this week."

De Roey is the first Lobo to claim MW medalist honors since Jodi Ewart in 2010.

De Roey, Mak and Nevada's Nikki Prichard all took turns atop the leaderboard in the final round.

De Roey, who began the final round two shots back, held the outright lead at 4 over after a birdie on 9. She shot 34 on the front, but fell to a 39 on the back, dropping two shots behind Mak.

Having to wait almost 90 minutes for Mak to complete her round, De Roey and her Lobo teammates left the course to have lunch.

Mak took a one-shot advantage after a birdie at the par-3 17th, but she bogeyed 18 to set up the playoff.

A native of Schilde, Belgium, De Roey won UNM's first tournament of the season last September at the Colonel Bill Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Windsor, Colo. She is just the fourth Lobo to win at least two tournaments in an academic year. Caroline Keggi won three times in 1986-87. Kristi Arrington (1984-85) and Jodi Ewart (2008-09) both won twice.

As a team, the Lobos posted their best round of the tournament (306) to finish at 85-over 949 (323-320-306) and move ahead of Colorado State for sixth place in the eight-team field.

UNLV (904) won the team championship by 12 shots over Boise State.

"It was a good way to finish," said UNM head coach Jill Trujillo of De Roey's triumph. "I'm proud of the way we finished, especially senior Beth Buchner."

Junior Sammi Stevens posted her best round of the tournament (75) to finish in 12th place at 231 (78-78-75). For the tournament, Stevens was 1 over on the front nine, but 14 over on the rugged back side.

Stevens entered the championships second in the MW with a scoring average of 74.62.

De Roey and Stevens were named first team all-Mountain West. Stevens was also chosen to the squad in 2012.

Senior Beth Buchner birdied the first two holes leading to a 75, her best round of the spring. She finished 35th at 246 (86-85-75).

Junior Sofia Hoglund finished in a tie for 36th at 249 (84-82-83). Freshman Ira Knopf tied for 39th at 266 (88-87-91).
