Fortner In First Place After Day One Of MWC Championships

Sandy Fortner is in first place in the heptathlon after day one of the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at the Great Friends of New Mexico Track and Field Stadium. The senior came in first in all four events. Fortner performed beautifully in the 100m hurdles and the high jump to jump out ahead of the competition. Richard York is currently in 2nd place in the decathlon after the completion of the day.

Fortner ran a time of 14.19 in the 100m hurdles. Mindy Robins of BYU came in second with a time of 14.42.

In the second event of the heptathlon Fortner jumped a mark of 5-7 (1.70m) in the high jump. Fortner led with 1,807 points, 111 points better than second place.

Fortner didn't ease up even with the large lead. The Fort Sumner, N.M. product went on to take first place in the shot put with a mark of 44-02.75 (13.48m) good for 759 points and a season-best in the event.

The New Mexico standout finished the day with a time of 24.97 in the 200 meters to bring her point total to 3,456. The score puts her 439 points ahead of the competition.

York finished first in the 100m dash with a time of 10.98 good for 865 points in the decathlon. In his second event of the day the freshman took second in the long jump with a mark of 22-3.5 (6.79m) to add 764 points to his score.

Brian Wilson hit PR's in both the shot put and long jump. Wilson threw a mark of 38-11.00 (11.86m) in the shot put good for a 5th place finish and beating his old PR of 36-9.5. Wilson finished 5th in the long jump with a mark of 21-2.5 (6.46m) beating his old PR of 20-5.75.

York finished right behind Wilson in the shot put in 6th place with a mark of 37-05.00 (11.40m). York tied his season-best in the high jump with a mark of 6-4.25 (1.94m), good for a 2nd place finish. To end the day York took the lead coming out of the last turn of the 400 meters to take first place with a time of 48.98 also marking a season-best.

York has a total of 3,810 in the decathlon, 155 points behind Jay Petsch from Wyoming. Wilson ends the day in 3rd place with a total of 3,516 points. Senior Jeremy Lee is in 8th place after day one with 3,123 points.

Day two of the combined will begin Thursday at noon with the women's long jump and the men's 110m hurdles.
