SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Friday night was a test of tenacity for the University of New Mexico softball team as the Lobos went 11 innings against the University of San Diego in their second game of the day and outlasted the Toreros, 2-1, on their home field, the USD Softball Complex in San Diego, Calif.

New Mexico won two games in its opening day at the San Diego Classic I hosted by USD and San Diego State and improved to 11-9 overall. The Lobos started their day with a 4-2 win over Utah State and closed with the 2-1 extra-innings marathon victory over San Diego.

"Kari Gutierrez and Kaela DeBroeck threw two great games today and Lauren Soles came in a threw really well in relief against San Diego," head coach Erica Beach said. We have to continue to grow from these games and hopefully take this experience to make us better for conference play.

"I'm very proud of how hard the girls are playing. It was a good way to start day one of the tournament."

The night game proved to be a true pitcher's duel and display of solid defense as it remained scoreless through 10 innings.

Each team was able to get runners on -- each team finished with nine runners left on base -- getting them home, however, was a different story.

Until the top of the 11th inning, that is.

"We struggled early on with USD's pitcher, but the girls kept pluggin away and finally we wereable to get that clutch hit," Beach said. "Naomi and Cassie came through big time when we needed them."

The international tie-breaker rule came into effect in the top of the 10th and the Lobos finally struck in the top of the 11th.

Rimmer was the last out of the previous inning and was placed on second base. A single to third base by Ingram added pressure on the Torero defense and then a double to right field by Naomi Tellezand a throwing error by the right fielder allowed Rimmer to score. Ingram was thrown out at home, but Tellez used heads-up base running and advanced to third amidst all the action, keeping another runner in scoring position for New Mexico. Kalapsa brought her in with a single to shortshop on the next at-bat, giving the Lobos an insurance run and making the score 2-0 after 10 1/2 innings of softball.

San Diego scored one run in the bottom of the 11th, but was unable to bring any others around and the Lobos secured the victory.

Senior Kaela DeBroeck got the start against the Toreros and held them scoreless through seven innings.

Senior Kaela DeBroeckstarted the game and threw seven innings. She allowed seven hits, but held the Toreros scoreless while walking none and striking out three.

Freshman lefty Lauren Solesrelieved DeBroeck and tossed the final four innings of the extended contest. USD didn't manage a hit off Soles but scored one earned run. She walked two and struck out two and improves to 5-2 overall.

Offensively, the Lobos managed seven hits off the Toreros' pitcher Jenny Lahitte who threw the entire 11 innings. Lahitte walked just one batter and fanned 15.

Senior Kaity Ingram and freshmen Naomi Tellez and Courtney Geith each registered two hits while Cassandra Kalapsawas the other Lobo to record a hit. Tellez and Kalapsa had an RBI apiece.

The Lobos resume play in the San Diego Classic I tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. MT contest against Long Beach State. New Mexico faces BYU at 12:30 p.m. MT.

Lobos 4, Utah State 2

Five Lobos recorded one hit apiece in Lobos contest with Utah State: Mariah Rimmer, Chelsea Anaya, Cassandra Kalapsa, Mia Hignojos and Jordyn Bledsoe. Anaya had two RBI while Rimmer and Hignojos each had one.

Senior pitcher Kari Gutierrezearned the win and improves to 2-2. In seven innings pitched she allowed just four hits and two unearned runs while walking three and striking out four.

New Mexico found itself down, 2-0, after an inning-and-a-half of play on Friday afternoon as the Aggies strung together two hits and capitalized on a Lobo miscue to score two runs in the top of the second.

Utah State held the lead until the bottom of the third. The Aggies committed a fielding error while allowed Sheryl Guillermoto reach first base. She advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt down the third base line by Bledsoe and moved to third when Sjostrand knocked a single to center. A single by Rimmer followed, driving in Guillermo and putting the Lobos on the board.

With just one out accounted for, the Lobos' scoring spree continued as Kaity Ingramdrew a walk next, loading up the bases and then a single up the middle by Anaya drove in Sjostrand and Rimmer and moved the score to 3-2 in favor of the Lobos.

New Mexico still had the bases loaded, but Utah State threw a runner out at home and then made a play in the outfield to end the inning.

Notes: Tonight's game was the the third time this season that the Lobos have gone to extra innings...New Mexico is now 2-1 when going into extra innings...11.0 innings is the most the Lobo softball team has played in recent history since May 15, 2010 when UNM dropped a 10-inning 7-6 decision to San Diego State at home.
