ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- In an effort to continue the growing tradition of Lobo soccer, the University of New Mexico has reconstructed Robertson Field into a larger and more improved practice facility.

The field remains located adjacent to the UNM Soccer Complex, home of UNM soccer games, in the south athletic campus.

The renovation project started in May with an overhaul of the original field, which was divided into two sections by a line of trees and a small fence. The trees and fence were removed to make the practice field one large area. The grass was regraded and a new irrigation system was installed. In addition, UNM constructed a 12 foot tall fence with lockable gates on the west side of the field, sectioning off the area from the football practice fields to make Robertson a more distinct soccer training area exclusively for Lobo soccer.

With the size of the field now over 26,000 square yards, the Lobos have enough room to fit three regulation-sized soccer fields, giving them plenty of options on practice days.

The field will not only be a practice haven for the Lobos, but also a place visiting opponents can train before game days. The entrance is marked by a new sign over the main gate to the facility that says " Robertson Field Home of the University of New Mexico Lobo Soccer."

Once preseason is underway, the field will be lined and will have goals accessible for practice time.

Head women's soccer coach Kit Vela sees the renovation as a huge step for New Mexico soccer.

"It is one of the best training facilities in the country," said Vela. "It's a pure soccer environment now that we can use to train our players."

Robertson Field began as the home field for the Lobos before the construction of the UNM Soccer Complex. This was the first renovation of the field in the 25 years of its existence.

Below are some photos of the newly renovated field along with pictures from the last week of the women's soccer summer camps held Aug. 1-4.
