Albuquerque, N.M.--- To generate additional revenue for student-athlete scholarships, the University of New Mexico Athletics Department and the Lobo Club are increasing contribution levels to acquire complimentary parking in high-demand lots at Lobo football and men's basketball games.

Season parking passes are a Lobo Club benefit given out annually based on contributions to the Lobo Scholarship Fund or the Gift-in-Kind program. The increase in contribution levels were discussed and ultimately approved by both the Lobo Club Board and the UNM Alumni Lettermen's Association Board of Directors.

"While we are sensitive to the impact these changes will have on our fans, we believe this is a necessary step in our efforts to field competitive programs at the conference and national level," said Paul Krebs, UNM Vice President for Athletics. "We have not made any changes to the Lobo Club donations for parking in the last five years, and in certain lots it has been more than 10 years. With the demand for proximity parking continuing to rise, we felt the timing was right."

Here is a summary of the Lobo Club's parking changes for the 2013-14 season:

  • For football, the minimum donation required for the Stadium North 4 lot has been increased from $250 to $500. However, a new $250 lot, the TVC lot across the street to the north of RV parking, has been added.
  • For men's basketball, the minimum donation required for complimentary Lobo Club parking benefits has been increased from $100 to $250.
  • For men's basketball, the minimum donation required for the Stadium West lot has moved from $500 to $900 and the Isotopes lot from $250 to $500.
  • "There are fundamental economic factors that have led to these changes," said Ben Darwin, the President of the Lobo Club Board. "The price of having an outstanding athletics department has gone up, and we hope that all Lobo fans embrace a move that is necessary to help provide scholarships and opportunity for our student-athletes."

According to Executive Director Lee De Leon, "We have done a tremendous amount of research and have had several conversations with Lobo Club members at various giving levels. We feel that these donation levels for parking are relatively low and are still a tremendous bargain."

De Leon said there are numerous parking options available for Lobo Club members who choose not to increase their annual contributions. If members choose to increase their donations, they can be assured that their gift will directly impact UNM's 450 student-athletes. All donations to the Lobo Club are tax-deductible and members also will receive other benefits associated with that giving level, including the opportunity to upgrade seat locations.
