LAS VEGAS -- The University of New Mexico softball team was held to just four hits and left six runners stranded in an 8-0 series-opening loss at Mountain West foe UNLV on Friday night. The Lobos dropped to 18-25 overall and 2-5 in league play while UNLV improved to 17-22 overall and 3-4 in MW contests.

New Mexico and UNLV play at 2 p.m. MT tomorrow at Eller Media Stadium.

Rebel hurler Amanda Oliveto, the reigning MW Pitcher of the Week, threw a complete game and improved to 14-11. The junior gave up just four hits in 24 batters faced. She walked just one and struck out two.

Freshman lefty Lauren Soles (8-12) started in circle for UNM. Soles gave up five hits and four runs, three earned, while walking one and striking out one three and 2/3 innings.

Lisa Rodrigues came on in relief and tossed the final two innings. The freshman allowed four hits and four runs while walking two and striking out one.

Senior and reigning MW Player of the Week Cassandra Kalapsa led New Mexico at the plate as she went 2-for-3 and reached base three times.

Freshman Mariah Rimmer and sophomore Mia Hignojos had the Lobos' other two hits. Rimmer added two stolen bases in the contest.

UNLV scored eight runs on nine hits and left seven runners on.

The Rebels struck twice in the first inning and doubled their lead in the third before putting up one run in the fifth and adding three more in the sixth.

With runners on third and second in the first inning, consecutive illegal pitch calls accounted for UNLV's first two runs.

In the third, the Rebels' leadoff batter reached on a throwing error and made it to third base off a single through the right side by Tayler Van Acker. Both runners were driven in off a double to right center by Pauline Monreal.

UNLV scored one run on one hit in the fifth as Emily Haslinger hit a two-out solo homer.

The Rebels' three runs in the sixth were enough to cut the game an inning short. A single and walk followed by back-to-back singles, a ground-out and a wild pitch gave UNLV the run-rule victory in the bottom of the sixth.

New Mexico had three errors in Friday night's contest while UNLV had two.
