2013-14 (Senior Season)
Hegelund posted an overall singles record 16-9 in his senior and final year with the Lobos. Playing primarily in the No. 6 singles position, Hegelund finished the regular season with a 12-5 record and a 4-4 singles record for the fall tournament season.
Hegelund ended his senior season with a 15-7 doubles record. Hegelund competed primarily with teammate Andrew Van Der Vyver in the No. 3 doubles spot. The duo posted a 6-3 regular season doubles record.
Hegelund’s final regular season match as a Lobo was quite memorable as he clinched UNM’s victory over the Nevada Wolfpack on Senior Day. It was a fairytale ending for the only senior on the 2013-14 men’s tennis roster.
Hegelund completed the 2014 Mountain West Championships with two losses and one unfinished match. Hegelund and Van Der Vyver picked up doubles win on the first two days of the tournament, but lost their doubles match on day three to top-seeded Fresno State.
He received plenty of recognition for his academic success during his senior year. Hegelund was named to the 2014 Captial One/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII At-Large team, named to the 2014 MW Academic All-Conference team, and named a 2014 MW Scholar-Athlete. Hegelund was also named a 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete.
2012-2013 (Junior Season)
Hegelund received plenty of recognition for his academic achievements in the 2012-13 season. He was named to the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete team in April 2013. Hegelund was also named to the ITA All-Academic Team for the 2012-13 season. Hegelund completed the 2012-13 season with an overall singles record of 13-17. Hegelund broke even in conference play with record of 2-2.
2011-12 (Sophomore Season)
He posted an overall singles record of 21-8 and an overall doubles record of 12-7. He received the Mountain West Academic All-Conference Award for spring 2012. He was one of four for UNM men's tennis to receive the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award for 2011-12. Hegelund reached the finals of doubles at the NMSU Invitational with Mitch McDaniels. He went 5-2 in singles at the ITA Regional Tournament.
2010-2011 (Freshman Season)
In singles, he went 5-5 for the season. He held the number seven spot on the team behind a bunch of upperclassmen and played number six frequently. He was the deciding match in a 4-3 victory against Middle Tennessee at the HEB Corpus Christi Tournament.
Prior to UNM
He is a 2010 graduate of George Washington High School in Denver, Colo. He was the number one singles player for his high school. He placed 3rd at state his senior year. He was coached by Kenneth Mason.
He is the son of Thomas and Helle Hegelund and has one younger brother, Simon, who played tennis at UNM from 2011-2013. The family is originally from Copenhagen, Denmark. His hobbies include tennis, reading, music, watching and playing sports, and hanging out with friends. His favorite athlete is Roger Federer. He plans to major in psychology.
