Lobo senior snaps UNM's single-season rebounding record that held up since 1961
Veteran Albuquerque sports journalist Richard Stevens has joined the University of New Mexico athletics department as a senior writer for GoLobos.com, the official website of Lobo athletics. Stevens, a 1973 graduate of the UNM School of Journalism, will cover all of the Lobos' 21 intercollegiate sports programs, writing features, essays and game recaps.
"Richard is an outstanding writer whose work is very familiar to all Lobo fans," said UNM Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs. "We are delighted to have Richard as part of our family. His writing skills, story telling and wit will enhance our website and make it a must read for Lobo fans."
Stevens was a sports writer and sports columnist for the Albuquerque Tribune for 35 years, from 1973-2008. He also served as the Tribune's Associate Sports Editor from 2003-08.
Stevens won more than 20 national and state journalism awards from Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE), E.H. Shaffer Awards presented by the New Mexico Press Association, and the Albuquerque Press Club.
"A lot of people may be thinking that I'm changing teams - kind of like Brett Favre," said Stevens. "But, my first team was actually the Lobos. When I went to UNM my two favorite athletes were Rocky Long (former quarterback and currently UNM's head football coach) and Petie Gibson (men's basketball, 1969-71). I'm back on that team and look forward to the challenge of being a Lobo again."
