MOSCOW — Former University of New Mexico track and field athlete Jarrin Solomon qualified to the semifinal round of the men's 400-meter dash Sunday at the 14th IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Solomon, a 2009 Lobo graduate and Albuquerque native, clocked a personal best of 45.19 seconds for Trinidad and Tobago, easily qualifying to tomorrow's semifinals.

With the top four finishers in each heat and the next four fastest finishers advancing, Solomon comfortably moved on via his opening-round performance, placing second in the fifth of five heats.

He also finished sixth overall out of 35 runners.

Solomon entered competition at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow with a previous personal record of 45.31, set in June.

The semifinals will be contested tomorrow at 8:05 p.m. local time (10:05 a.m. MT). The top two finishers from each of three heats and the next two will advance to Tuesday's finals.

The United States' LaShawn Merritt claimed first overall in 44.92, while fellow Trinidadian Deon Lendore took fifth overall (45.17), just edging Solomon's mark.
