Albuquerque, N.M. --- University of New Mexico Athletics will honor a long-time friend of athletics as Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs has announced the formation of the Peter Johnstone Student-Athlete Assistance Fund.
The Johnstone Assistance Fund will receive a formal kick-off during the Howl of a Good Time Auction on Friday, August 23.
"Peter during his lifetime was a tremendous Lobo, one with a great love and passion for the University of New Mexico, and our student-athletes," said Krebs. "Peter and I had a chance to talk the week of his passing about the Student-Athlete Assistance Fund and how important it can be for students in need, and it is something he truly believed in."
The Peter Johnstone Student-Athlete Assistance Fund will help to fund needs for student-athletes, from fifth-year aid to a variety of potential needs that student-athlete scholarships do not cover. Initial donations for the Peter Johnstone Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund will occur during the live auction at the Howl of a Good Time Auction this Friday.
Peter Johnstone is twice a graduate of New Mexico. He graduated with his bachelor's in 1971, and then again in 1974 from the UNM School of Law. He was a member of the State Bar of New Mexico, including a stint as President of the Albuquerque Bar Association. In 1991, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Lawyer Award presented by the Albuquerque Bar Association. Both of his children, Michael and Meredith, are University of New Mexico graduates. He passed away on July 6 of this year.
