ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Two young Lobos are having tremendous summer leagues in 2013. Rising junior Alex Real was named an All-Star in the West Coast League and rising sophomore Victor Sanchez was just named Texas Collegiate League Player of the Week.

Real is threatening for the WCL triple crown for the Victoria HarbourCats as his .396 average leads the league, he is second with four home runs and tied for third with 22 RBI. He is one home run and four RBI shy of the lead in each respective category. He currently owns a 10-game hitting streak during which he has hit .476 (20-for-42) to raise his average 58 points.

"He is probably the front runner for league MVP right now," HarbourCats broadcaster Ryan Rouillard said. "Fortunately, there's no such thing as getting called up in the WCL or Alex would be long gone."

On July 8 Real was named HarbourCats Player of the Week after he went 9-for-27 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and eight RBI. Two of his hits gave Victoria a late-inning lead, including a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the eighth against the Kelowna Falcons on July 7. In addition to batting he also leads the WCL in slugging (.604) and OPS (1.043).

While Real is scorching hot north of the border, Sanchez has been  awfully hot himself while pitching for the Acadiana Cane Cutters in the sweltering heat of Louisiana and Texas. His complete-game, three-hit victory over the Victoria Generals on July 5 earned him his Player of the Week honor. He struck out eight and allowed just one run on three hits and one walk.

He followed that up with seven innings of shutout ball against the Texas Marshalls on July 14. He struck out five and allowed just five hits while lowering his ERA to 2.43. He sports a 3-1 record and 21 strikeouts in 29.2 innings over six appearances (five starts). He has allowed just two runs in his last 20 innings of work.

For the Lobos in 2013, Sanchez earned his first career win by pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief against the Nevada Wolf Pack and first-round pick Braden Shipley. Sanchez kept the Lobos in the game as they were able to claw their way back from an 8-3 deficit against Shipley, the 15th overall pick in June's MLB Draft, and the Nevada bullpen.
