Today: DJ Peterson, MW Male Athlete of Year, picked 12th by Seattle

By Richard Stevens - Senior Writer/GoLobos.com

If DJ Peterson wasn't such a classy Lobo, you might expect him to have thumbed his nose a few times at the University of Arizona on his sojourns across the Southwest.

But probably losing Peterson to UNM was punishment enough for the Wildcats, who once had this superstar signed and delivered before dropping him to open up a scholarship. But, hey, teams make mistakes. Michael Jordon once got cut, too.

So what did Peterson do with his opportunity to hit under the wise tutelage of Ray Birmingham? Well, almost everything.

Peterson became an NCAA star as a freshman, hit his way onto numerous All-America teams over the past three seasons, and kept smashing the ball for UNM until the Seattle Mariners made him a millionaire by drafting him as the 12th pick in the first round this June.

Which is the highest pick ever by a New Mexico Lobo baseball player.

It also was a wise move by Peterson to improve his stock at the NCAA level as he was drafted in the 33rd round coming out of high school and could have signed with a six-figure bonus.

His bonus is a bit higher this time around.

Peterson's career at UNM is nothing short of amazing and he will miss out on his senior year thanks to the lure of the Major Leagues. Peterson hit .408 in 2013 with 18 dingers and 72 RBIs. He led the Mountain West in eight statistical categories in 2013 and captured the MW Triple Crown.

Peterson was the Co-Mountain West Player of the Year in baseball along with teammate Mitch Garver. The MVP award is obviously an accomplishment when you consider the talent on the Mountain West diamonds.

But Peterson went a step further by being named the 2012-13 Mountain West Male Athlete of the Year. This is an amazing accomplishment when you consider he was picked above the stars in every sport - at every Mountain West school.
