ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The University of New Mexico Men's tennis program was recently recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for its academic achievement. The Lobos qualified for the award after they earned a cumulative 3.42 GPA during the 2012-13 season.
The men's tennis team also had six players recognized for their individual academic success. Simon Hegelund, Mads Hegelund, Sam Iftikhar, James Hignett, Ben Dunbar, and Jadon Phillips were named Scholar-Athletes after maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA throughout the school year. With a team roster of only 13 players, having six Scholar-Athletes on the team is a commendable accomplishment.
This isn't the first time that the 2012-13 men's tennis team has received recognition for their hard work off the court. In June, the Lobos had five players named to the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Team. Mads Hegelund, Simon Hegelund, Hignett, Iftikhar and Phillips each received the title due to their success within the Mountain West. UNM accounted for five MW Scholar-Athletes while the rest of the conference accounted for a total of four Scholar-Athletes.
Phillips, who went 20-14 last season, was also named one of the Mountain Region winners of the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award in May. Phillips received the award for his athletic and academic accomplishments.
"I'm very proud of our accomplishments on and off the court," said Coach Alan Dils. "The guys have done a great job in the classroom for many years now and these awards are small recognitions of that hard work."
The Lobos definitely have earned all of the recognition they have received in the last few months and it can be expected that they will continue representing UNM in an honorable manner.
