SaQwan Edwards’ 45-yard fumble return in the first quarter for the first score of the season marked the third straight season the Lobos scored first in their season opener.

For the second consecutive season opener, the Lobos officially committed just one penalty for 5 yards.

UNM’s 277 yards of total offense were its lowest output since netting 127 yards vs. Texas Tech on Sept. 15, 2012.

The Lobos dropped to 64-48-3 all-time in season openers and 53-22-2 in home openers.


Sophomore WR Marquis Bundy recorded his first career reception in the second quarter, an 8-yard pass from sophomore QB Cole Gautsche. Bundy finished with three catches for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Gautsche threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Bundy with 11:42 left in the first half. It was Gautsche’s third career TD pass and the first TD of Bundy’s career.

Gautsche surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for the third time in his career. He finished with 118 rushing yards.

Junior quarterback Clayton Mitchem played in his first game, completing 2 of 5 passes for 19 yards and running three times for 8 yards.


Junior CB SaQwan Edwards returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown for UNM’s first score of the season. It was Edwards’ second career TD. He had a TD run as a WR last season.

Junior LB Javarie Johnson forced UTSA RB Evans Okotcha to fumble the ball at the Roadrunners 45. It was Johnson’s second career forced fumble.

Freshman NT Nik D’Avanzo recorded his first career tackle at the 6:25 mark of the first quarter.

Senior NT Jacori Greer recorded his first sack of the season with 9 ½ minutes left in the second quarter. He led UNM with five sacks in 2012.

Senior LB Dallas Bollema and senior DE Fatu Ulale combined for the first sack of the season for UNM. It the first credit of a sack in Ulale’s career. Ulale finished with 1.5 sacks for the game.

Special Teams

Senior P Ben Skaer had three punts of 50 or more yards, giving him 38 for his career. He also landed four of his seven punts Saturday inside the 20 and had two downed at the 1.
