Lobo Faithful:

The 2013 University of New Mexico Soccer Season kicked off in grand fashion Friday night. Lobos versus Villanova. 2,800 in the stands, clear blue skies and LOUD! 500 Vuvuzela's were distributed to the Lobo Faithful in attendance and the match atmosphere was electric. I felt good about our preseason and exhibition matches; we were able to evaluate all our players and saw which combinations worked best. After battling some pre-season injuries, we were able to put a very strong team out versus Villanova.

We knew we had quality in attack, but were unsure how everyone would respond to the opening match and initial nerves. Our concerns were quickly put to rest. We were good from the kickoff and put Villanova on their heels. 21 minutes in, James Rogers finished off a Michael Calderon corner kick to go up 1-0. Things were looking good.

In sports, the natural tendency is to mentally let down after a goal, touchdown or three-pointer. We talk about this as a team and constantly put emphasis on the minutes immediately following a goal. 40 seconds after scoring our first goal of the year, we gave up our first goal of the year. Uncharacteristic mistakes from veteran players. One on one and an episode, which will not be repeated.

We regained focus and eight minutes later James Rogers was brought down in the box following some dynamic combination play in the attack. Calderon slotted the PK... 2-1 Lobos and no looking back.

Five minutes later, Rogers with some great work on the right flank and cross to Riley McGovern….one time finish from Riley's head: 3-1 Lobos.

Three minutes later and Riley returned the favor with a great ball to Rogers from the end line to make it 4-1. This is how the first half closed.

Four minutes into the second half saw freshman, Niko Hansen, find the net for his first collegiate goal with the assist from freshman Josh Goss. 5-1 Lobos.

In the 80th minute Wehan with a great assist to Calderon for Calde's second of the match. In the 82nd Hansen with his second of the match and career, 7-1 Lobos. The scoring finished up in the 82nd minute with Villanova scoring their 2nd of the match to make the final 7-2 Lobos. Plenty of action, with the only negative being the two goals allowed. Everyone is healthy and excited to get back at it this Friday night at Virginia Commonwealth.

We take off early Thursday morning for Richmond, Virginia and Friday's 7:00 pm match versus Virginia Commonwealth. VCU is coming off an NCAA 2nd round appearance and a "Top 25" preseason ranking. They’re a very talented, attacking team. Recovery day Saturday and off to the Nation's capital Sunday to face the pre-season #2 ranked and 2012 national runner-up, Georgetown Hoya's at noon. One game at a time. The boys are focused and excited for the upcoming challenges. For streaming information and live stats, click here
