Lobo Cross Country Claims Top Spots in Midseason Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico men's and women's cross-country teams claimed the top spots in the first of two Mountain West midseason coaches’ polls.

The vote, released Wednesday, has the preseason coaches’ favorites keeping hold of the top honors in the conference . The women’s squad have won five consecutive MW titles, while the men have won four years in a row.

In the men’s poll, New Mexico received seven first-place votes and 49 total points, followed by Air Force, who received one first-place vote and collected 42 points. Boise State is third with 34 points, followed by Colorado State in fourth place with 29 points. Wyoming (25 points), Utah State (23 points), Fresno State (15 points) and San José State (seven points) round out the men’s poll.

On the women’s side, New Mexico tallied 10 first-place votes for a total of 100 points to earn the top spot. Boise State garnered one first-place vote and 90 points to claim second place. Air Force and Colorado State each earned 74 points to tie for third, followed by Wyoming with 58 points. Nevada (53 points) and Utah State (53 points) tied for sixth place, with Fresno State (30 points), San Diego State (27 points), UNLV (20 points) and San José State (17 points) concluding the poll results.

The next MW midseason coaches’ poll will be announced on Oct. 16. The 2013 Mountain West Cross Country Championships will be hosted by the Air Force Academy at the Eisenhower Blue Course on Friday, Nov. 1.

The Lobos will run again for the first time since Sept. 7 when they head to the Notre Dame Invitational next Friday, Oct. 4.
