Perhaps, the best part about the University of New Mexico men’s golf team’s 12th-place finish at the 15-team Isleworth Collegiate Invitational last week is that the Lobos only had to wait a week to get back out on the course again.

UNM, Nos. 16 and 18 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat.com national polls, travels to Dallas to play in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. It’s the final event of the fall season for New Mexico.

The 12-team Royal Oaks field includes six teams ranked in Golfweek/Sagarin’s Top 20 – No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 12 Stanford, No. 13 Oklahoma, the Lobos and host and No. 19 Baylor – and eight in the Top 50.

“It’s always good to play a back-to-back to apply what you just learned at your last event,” UNM coach Glen Millican said. “Things are still fresh in your mind and you can get out there and go back at it.”

UNM’s two veteran players, Gavin Green (No. 12 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin collegiate individual poll) and Victor Perez tied for 16th at the Isleworth last week, but its three more inexperienced players – true freshman Andrej Bevins, sophomore Dylan Healey and junior Sam Saunders – struggled and finished in the bottom fifth of the field in their first experience at the event.

“Hopefully, what they learned last week is that you have to be disciplined in knowing where to put the ball,” Millican said. “The Isleworth course, there were certain places on each of the holes where you absolutely could not go.

“It’s pretty rare for a player who hasn’t seen a course like that to be able to stay keep the ball in play away from the areas that are going to penalize you. You kind of have to see the mistakes happen to make adjustments.”

Junior Sean Romero and sophomore Joe Abella will participate for the Lobos this week, replacing Healey. Royal Oaks fields six-player teams with five counting toward the team score – rather than the normal 5-4 format.

Taking six players will help the Lobos get more players experience in a tournament setting.

“The course we’re going to this week is not a severe as Florida or Iowa (for the Golfweek Conference Challenge in September), but you still have to know where to hit it and where to stay away from,” Millican said.

The Royal Oaks field will play 36 holes Monday with a 7:30 a.m. MT tee time for the first round. The teams will conclude with 18 holes Tuesday and a 7:30 a.m. MT tee time. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
