ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Lobo Samir Iftikhar has been selected to compete in the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. as announced on Thursday, October 31st.

Iftikhar originally held the number one spot on the alternate player list, but the International Tennis Association officially announced his selection to compete in the event after the No. 1 seed of the tournament withdrew.

It is Iftikhar’s recent success in the 2013 fall season that put him in the position to be chosen as an at-large selection. Since pre-season began in late August, he has received a pre-season ranking of 115, competed in the Pre-Qualiying Draw at the ITA All-American Championships, and took second place in the singles at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship.

“Sammy has put in a lot of time and worked really hard to get here,” head coach Alan Dils said. “It is a really great tournament to be apart of.”

The tournament, hosted by Columbia University, will be played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Nov. 7-10. The prestigious event is the only tournament on the ITA calendar that showcases elite players from every level of college tennis.

The National Indoor Championship will include a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw. Iftikhar will only be competing in the singles category.

Tournament draws have not yet been released.
