ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Silver used 12 unanswered runs, including 11 spanning the third and fourth innings, to clinch the annual Cherry-Silver series Wednesday at Lobo Field courtesy of a 12-4 victory.
Kevin Baumgartner got the win for Silver by allowing just three runs, two earned, on eight hits in six innings of the seven-inning affair as Silver won its third straight to win the best-of-five series.
“He threw really well with a lot of strikes," Silver coach Ken Jacome said. "Once we gave him the lead he handled it from there.”
After Cherry scratched an unearned run across in the third, Silver answered with a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning and six the next frame. Silver batted around the lineup in both innings.
The scoring got started when nine-hole hitter David Gunther hit his first of two doubles on the day to lead off the third. After the next batter singled, Sam Haggerty hit a two-run double to give Silver the lead for good. Ryan Padilla and Lane Milligan each added an RBI single in the inning before the scoring was capped when Andre Vigil hit a RBI groundout to second.
In the fourth Gunther once again led off with a double and scored on a Haggerty double. Haggerty later scored when John Pustay got in a rundown between first and second. With two outs and nobody on base Padilla doubled down the right field line. The next six batters for Silver proceeded to reach base including two singles, a double, and three walks, which allowed Silver to score four more runs.
Silver had a plethora of offensive stars. Haggerty had two doubles and three RBI, Pustay went 2-for-2 with a walk, and Padilla reached base five times thanks to a walk, two HBP, a single and a double. Gunther also added two walks to go with his two doubles. Josh Alexander came off the bench and had a triple and a single in two plate appearances.
Jacome was pleased with the total team effort in the win.
“We swung the bats well,” he said. “In the third and fourth we got a leadoff double, we got a bunt down, we hit-and-ran a couple times, and we executed well.”
Following the game the Silver team celebrated with a sparkling grape juice shower behind the dugout, proving how much this series means to the players involved.
The series will conclude Thursday night at 7 under the lights at Lobo Field.
