ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer program has earned the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The award is the highest academic team award a program can earn. The Lobos earned the award after posting a 3.43 team grade point average for the 2012-13 academic year.
The award is the program’s tenth since 2003. New Mexico is one of only four Conference USA programs to receive the award, joining South Carolina, Kentucky and UAB. The team recorded a program record 3.43 gpa in the fall semester of the last academic year.
The team award compliments several individual academic accolades for New Mexico. Earlier this month, Kyle Venter and James Rogers were both named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team. Venter and Nick Miele also earned Academic All-Conference USA honors this month. Miele and Venter’s inclusion on the Academic All-Conference USA Team marks the 85th and 86th time a Lobo has received academic all-conference honors during the Jeremy Fishbein era (2002 – present). The program has fielded 18 academic All-Americans during that same time.
Coach Fishbein and the Lobos return to the pitch on Sunday as the seventh overall seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. New Mexico will host the winner of George Mason and William & Mary at 5 p.m. on Sunday evening at the UNM Soccer Complex in the second round of the tournament.
