University of New Mexico Lobo Soccer is still dancing…dancing into the Final Four in Philly! It was quite a trip to Seattle and the "Elite 8" last Saturday. The Washington Huskies were everything they were built up to be: tough, athletic, composed, confident and skillful…the dreaded "flip throw" was "no joke". The Huskies were very well organized and coached. It was a game both Coach Brandon Moss and I didn't look forward to. Not fun facing friends and former teammates; Moss and UW Assistant Jeff Rowland were teammates at New Mexico 2002-2005 and UW Head Coach Jamie Clark and I coached together at New Mexico 2002-2005. Enough nostalgia…great game, tough conditions and our boys were very, very good!
There is an intriguing story line regarding footwear, but I'll let you do the research. In short, genius Associate Head Coach Paul Souders remembered a tough loss versus a team in turf shoes….the field at Washington was very similar and Souders and Coach Moss put together a skeleton shopping crew on short notice and purchased 18 pairs of turf shoes in three hours from six sporting goods stores. A story which will live forever in Lobo Soccer History! 1-0 Victory to the Lobos with a dominating first half with the lone goal coming in the 36th minute from McKendry from a threaded Oniel Fisher assist. 16-8 Lobos in shots and GK Lisch making 3 saves. It was a complete performance against a talented opponent. This was our third NCAA Tournament shutout in a row….Defense wins BIG GAMES!
Can't say enough about our Lobo Faithful! We saw pockets of red throughout the stands in Seattle and 1000's of Lobo Soccer Supporters invaded establishments around Albuquerque to support YOUR TEAM! Standing room only crowds at Kelly's, Nob Hill Bar and Grill and Fox and Hound brought us energy throughout the match. The pictures on Facebook were incredible. Hope everyone is back on Friday to watch us play the Irish at 3:00 MST….need to take off work early and get the weekend started! Kelly's, Nob Hill and Fox and Hound will all have viewing parties for the match.
