ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobo men’s tennis team will open conference play on Friday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex as they take on the Boise State Broncos.

New Mexico and Boise State have had quite the past in the last few years and needless to say, the Lobos are looking for revenge.

Last season, the Lobos lost to the Broncos on two separate occasions. The first loss was a 7-0 defeat during regular season conference play. While it is never fun getting swept 7-0, it is the second loss that hurt the Lobos the most. On April 28, 2013, UNM and BSU faced off in the Mountain West Championship match. It was a long, tough match for both teams, but in the end the Broncos clinched the victory with a final score of 4-3. Not only is it tough for a team to lose 4-3, but the match was decided in a tie-breaker.

This wasn’t the first time that the Lobos and the Broncos have been in this situation. In the year before, 2011-12 season, UNM and BSU were also battling for the championship in the final round of the MW tournament. BSU also took home this title after defeating the Lobos 4-0.

Now the Lobos are hungry for a win over the Broncos. Both teams are stocked with young talent, strong veterans, and each has a Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranked player. No. 45 Samir Iftikhar will face No. 54 Andy Bettles in the No. 1 singles position.

With all of this history between the two teams, Friday’s match should be interesting.

The match starts at 5:00 p.m. MTN. Admission into the Linda Estes Tennis Complex is free.

Results will be posted on golobos.com and www.facebook.com/UNM.Men.Tennis at the end of each match.
