After 18 holes at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla., Lobo Coach Jill Trujillo was adamant about one of her expectations for Monday’s second round. She expected Manon De Roey would shoot a better round.
Trujillo was right.
The Lobo senior shot a 69 on Monday’s second 18 holes over the Eagle Creek Golf Club and De Roey’s sizzling card helped New Mexico cut seven strokes off its team score from the first 18 holes. The Lobos are in 12th place out of 19 teams.
“Manon puts a lot of pressure on herself and she had some small mistakes on Sunday,” said Trujillo. “Today she was relaxed and it was fun to watch her play. It’s a great course, but it’s not set up difficult and a lot of putts are running in.”
De Roey went from a 76 to her 69 and New Mexico went from 298 to 291 on Monday to make a seven-shot improvement on their scorecard.
UNM’s Sammi Stevens stayed steady and added a 72 to her first-round card of 71. Stevens is at 143 followed by De Roey at 145, Manon Molle at 75-73—148, Katerina Jaeger at 78-77-155 and Eva Saulnier at 76-82—158.
De Roey, starting on the No. 9 hole, opened with a birdie and then had back-to-back bogeys on No. 10 and No. 11. She finished with four birdies and no bogeys. On Monday, DeRoey had a single birdie against a bogey and two double bogeys to card the 76.
De Roey birded her final hole on Monday to slip into the 60s. “The two bogeys she had were out of bunkers,” said Trujillo. “She had bad lies and they were good bogeys. She had a great day putting and was striking the ball better today.”
The UCF Knights used their home grass advantage to grab the first-day lead at 282 and the Knights added a 285 on Monday to maintain their lead over Miami, which pulled in with a two day team total of 287-282—569 – two shots off the team lead.
Iowa State is in the third spot and still in the hunt for the team title at 292-281—573 and East Tennessee State is close at 288-286—574.
UNM’s Stevens was in a tie for ninth place after 18 holes, but her 72 dropped her into a tie for the ninth spot at 143 – six shots off the pace. “Sammi is still playing steady,” said Trujillo.
UNM was 16 shots behind UCF after 18 holes, but couldn’t gain on the leaders. UCF’s 285 on Monday pushed UNM 22 shots off the leading pace, but the Lobos are only two shots off the No. 8 spot and a top ten finish.
UCF’s Fanny Cnops held onto her lead by adding a 70 to her first-day care of 67. Cnops’ 137 total is a shot ahead of teammate Ashely Holder, who went 70-68 for a 138 card. Casey Kennedy of GRU Augusta is in third place at 68-71—139 and four golfers are at 140.
Stevens has a lot of golfers between her and the top of the leaderboard, but she is only one shot off another top ten finish. Stevens was only a shot higher on Monday with 71-72—143 card. De Roey’s 69 propelled her out of the 66th spot and into a tie for 23rd with a 145 total.
Stevens had three birdies and three bogeys on Monday to card her even-par 72.
