ALBUQUEQUE, N.M. – This week, the Lobo softball team will be on the road for the second weekend in a row, heading to the Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
After a tough opening weekend, the Lobos will be looking to get into a winning groove. Last weekend at the Kajikawa Classic, UNM went 1-4 and opened the season playing two top-25 ranked teams, Arizona State and California. The Lobos suffered three five-inning losses but picked up their first victory of 2014 against UC Riverside, winning 11-10.
Sophomore Naomi Tellez is leading the squad, hitting .636. She went 7-for-11 last week with four RBIs and .909 on-base percentage. Senior Chelsea Anaya was also an offensive threat, going 6-for-16 with two RBIs. She led the Lobos in their 11-10 win over UC Riverside, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
There has been a schedule change for this weekend. Due to weather conditions Georgia Tech will not be able to attend. The Lobos will kick off the first day with the University of Arizona at 4 p.m. The second game against Grand Canyon will be the same time, Saturday at 9 a.m., but the Lobos third and fourth game of the tournament will be flip flopped. Originally the Lobos were supposed to play Tennessee State at 1 p.m. on Saturday, but now the Lobos will be play No. 6/4 Alabama. The Lobos will play Tennessee State on Sunday at 9 a.m.
