ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team improved to 8-5 on the season with a 6-1 shutout over Ball State on Saturday evening. The Lobos finished the weekend with a perfect 2-0 record.
Still excited after their upset win over No. 54 Colorado on Friday night, the Lobos came out strong in their match against the Cardinals.
The duo of Natasha Smith and Meredith Hopson got off to a quick start in the No. 2 doubles position and picked up an 8-1 victory. Freshmen duo Emily Oliver and Dominique Dulski secured the doubles point for the Lobos with an 8-4 win in the No. 3 position.
Dulski claimed the first singles win for the Lobos with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 5 position. Hopson and Smith claimed the match for UNM with wins in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
Rachana Bhat, Lizette Blankers, and Michaela Bezdickova all played out their matches even though the match had already been decided. Bhat and Blankers both contributed wins to the Lobo’s final score. Bezdickova fell in a tough three-set match that ended in a 12-point tiebreaker.
“I am really happy for the team tonight,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “It was awesome to pick up another win in front of our home crowd. I thought we handled a late start and a very feisty Ball State team with excellent composure and discipline.”
The Lobos do not have another match until March 14th when they travel to Denton, Texas to face Liberty.
“This has been a tough few weeks,” Jasper said. “We’ve played a challenging schedule and a lot of physical matches, but I am so proud of the effort all the players have continued to put in each day and their focus on improving. Having next weekend off will be a nice opportunity to work on a few things as well as rest a few players who have some nagging injuries. The second half of our season won’t be any easier, so we’ll have to keep working and improving.”
