DENTON, Texas -- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team defeated Liberty, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in the first ever meeting between the two teams. The No. 69 Lobos are now 3-2 on the road.

It was a close match up at the Waranch Tennis Complex, but the Lobo’s doubles point and three singles wins allowed them to record their third straight victory.

UNM took the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Doubles team Natasha Smith and Meredith Hopson recorded an impressive 8-2 win in the No. 2 spot to give UNM an early advantage. No. 1 team Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers defeated Maria Khval and Rebekah Jenkins, 8-5, to claim the point for the Lobos.

“For not having competed in nearly two weeks, I was pretty pleased with the energy that we came out with in the doubles and as a result we were able to pick up wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots playing solid basics,” Head coach Erica Jasper.

Bezdickova kicked off singles play with a win in the No. 1 spot. Smith earned a win shortly after to give UNM a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Emily Olivier dropped a match in the No. 6 position to give the Eagles their first point of the match.

“In singles, I thought our discipline could have been a bit better,” Jasper said. “Liberty did a great job against us competing and fighting. We could have handled things better on a few courts.”

Dominique Dulski pulled through with a win in the No. 5 spot and clinched the match for UNM. She defeated Belen Rivera, 6-4, 7-5, in a highly contested match.

“Dominique really had a good day today,” Jasper said. “She fought exceptionally hard against a very good opponent despite being under the weather.”

UNM is now 9-5 on the season.

The Lobos play again on Sunday when they take on the No. 67 North Texas Mean Green.

“We have another very tough match come Sunday with UNT,” Jasper said. “We’ll have to find a way to be a bit better against them if we want to put ourselves in position to win.”
