ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – This summer, the University of New Mexico volleyball team is sending three members, Cassie House, Julia Warren and assistant coach JJ Glavan, to Europe to compete on the Mountain West All-Star team, July 8-19.
“It is a great opportunity for three of our Lobos,” said head UNM volleyball coach Jeff Nelson. “Julia and Cassie will get some great play and training in Europe and JJ will have a great coaching experience working with all these great young women and San Diego State’s Coach Collins.”
Among the 12 Mountain West student-athletes that were selected, House and Warren will represent the Lobos. Warren, one of three team members named All-Mountain West last season and also named the 2013 MW Freshman of the Year, is joined by conference honorees Kelsey Snider of Colorado State and Hanah Blume of San Jose State.
New Mexico is one of three teams to put two players on the squad. Colorado State and San Diego State are the two other teams sending two players. Joining House and Warren will be Lobos’ assistant coach Glavan, who will be assisting San Diego’s State women’s volleyball coach Deitre Collins-Parker on the trip.
“We are all so excited,” said Glavan. “It is such a valuable experience for both the players and myself. I feel it also speaks to the directions we are going with our program.”
The squad will travel to Venice, Italy for two days of training sessions and participate in two more days of friendly matches before competing in the 2014 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia. From July 13-18, the team will play against Junior National teams from Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia as well as club teams from Italy, Serbia, Austria and Romania.
