ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico baseball team got back to its winning ways last weekend, taking two of three from San Diego State to move into a first-place tie in the Mountain West. Two of the players that had key roles in that series win -- Colton Thomson and Alex Real -- have been named Mountain West Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. It's the first career honor for both players.
Thomson, a junior out of Gilbert, Ariz., started Saturday's 6-1 win over the Aztecs and was phenomenal. He hurled seven shutout innings and scattered six hits, all singles. He struck out two and did not walk a batter as he threw 67 of his 94 pitches for strikes. Over his final three innings he did not allow a single base runner past first.
Real, a junior out of Anthem, Ariz., hit .615 (8-for-13) for the week with a pair of multi-hit games. In Friday night's close 6-5 loss he gave UNM it's first lead of the game with an RBI single in the third inning. He finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and also threw out the MW leader in steals, Greg Allen, when he was attempting to steal second base. In UNM's 6-1 win on Saturday he went 3-for-5 with a run, UNM's first of the game in the second inning. He finished the weekend with a 4-for-4 performance in the Lobos' 13-5 win on Sunday. He had a pair of doubles, scored a run, drove in a run and was hit by a pitch. For the week he had a .615 OBP and slugged .769 while striking out just once in 14 plate appearances. He was also perfect in 12 chances behind the plate.
These are the sixth and seventh weekly awards for UNM this season, which leads the Mountain West. Josh Walker has been named Pitcher of the Week twice and Victor Sanchez once. Chase Harris and Sam Haggerty have each been named Player of the Week once.
