ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- By and large, deep snappers don’t get noticed much, unless something goes wrong.  For Lobo deep snapper Steven Romero, he was very much noticed by his teammates on Tuesday afternoon, and it was because everything went right.

Romero, a 6-1 sophomore and a native of Albuquerque who went to La Cueva High School was awarded a scholarship by head coach Bob Davie in front of his teammates at a team meeting.  He is entering his second season as the starting deep snapper for New Mexico.

In being awarded the scholarship, he becomes the fifth New Mexico walk-on to have been awarded a scholarship by head coach Bob Davie after  spending time as a walk-on.  He joins Xavier Madrid, Jeric Magnant, Reece White and David Anaya.  Romero joins Magnant, White and Anaya as former New Mexico Men to have since earned a scholarship.

The New Mexico Man program was instituted by Coach Davie prior to the 2012 season.  The player is selected weekly, based on dedication, work ethic, team spirit and unselfishness that exemplifies Lobo football and the state of New Mexico.  The New Mexico man leads the team out of the tunnel carrying the state flag across the field to the north end zone for the home crowd.  Romero was the New Mexico Man on October 19 last season for the Lobos’ game against Utah State.
