In Flagstaff, Ariz., University of New Mexico rising senior golfer Sam Saunders shot a sizzling, 8-under 62 on Thursday to move up 27 spaces on the leaderboard at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.

Saunders is tied for sixth place after three rounds of the event at 7-under 203 (69-72-62). He tied for the low round of the day with new leader Corey Pereira, who shot his second consecutive 62 to move to 16 under. He has a two-stroke lead over second-round leader Lorens Chan and Mark Anguiano.

Saunders had seven birdies, an eagle and a bogey at the Pine Canyon Club during his third round.

"I drove it real good in the fairway. I hit it close a few times and made those but didn't make too many mistakes," said Saunders. "I made a few good putts from 15 feet or so but didn't make any bombs or chip in. I kind of just plotted myself around. I was a little disappointed with yesterday’s round but 10 shots lower today was nice. Hopefully go post another good one tomorrow."

Saunders, who won the Albuquerque men’s city amateur championship last month, will tee off in Friday’s final round at 9:50 a.m. MT.
