ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The 2013 University of New Mexico Men’s Soccer season is still nearly three months away, but the excitement for the fall is already building thanks to some high praise from national soccer media outlet TopDrawerSoccer.com TopDrawerSoccer released position-by-position lists of the top players in the nation for the 2013 season. New Mexico placed Lobos in the top defenders, midfielders and forwards lists. Coach Fishbein and company are one of only three programs in the nation to have players represented in all three lists with Akron and UC Santa Barbara being the other two.
TopDrawerSoccer on defender Kyle Venter: “An outstanding central defender, Venter is a two-time All American who could easily have made the transition to the pro ranks this year. And while that obviously didn’t materialize, he’ll bring stability to a stout Lobos team, and look to earn national honors for a third year running while also guiding New Mexico deep into the NCAA tournament.”
TopDrawerSoccer on midfielder Michael Calderon: “Prior to his transfer to New Mexico in 2012, Calderon had three goals and one assist in 32 games with Fairleigh Dickinson over two seasons. Last season, he had four goals and eight assists in 19 games with the Lobos. Chalk it up either to more talent around him or a better system for his style of play, regardless, the Costa Rican is flourishing with the Lobos and is in for a standout campaign in his final collegiate year. Calderon has the skill and vision to keep this Lobo attack rolling despite the losses of Blake Smith and Devon Sandoval to MLS. With James Rogers in the attack and Calderon pulling the strings, the Lobos attack will still be dangerous.”
TopDrawerSoccer on forward James Rogers: “Another swift attacker, Rogers can play out wide or up front in an effort to get behind the back line. The Lobos need a big year from the forward with some U20 experience after the departures of Blake Smith and Devon Sandoval, but Rogers has the ability to make it happen.”
TopDrawerSoccer’s lists also speak to the strength of New Mexico’s schedule. 2013 opponents Tulsa, UC Santa Barbara and Georgetown combine to place six players on the various lists. While UNM’s exhibition opener versus Grand Canyon isn’t until August 17th, there are plenty of reasons to get excited now for the 2013 season.
