AUSTIN, Texas - After day one of the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary at Michael A. Myers Stadium, the University of New Mexico track and field team advanced one athlete to the national championships and two more to the quarterfinal round of competition. Distance star Sarah Waldron qualified to the finals in the 10,000-meter run while sprinter Beejay Lee and mid-distance runner Sam Evans advanced to the quarterfinals.

Waldron, a senior out of Puddleston, England, punched her ticket to the finals of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a 33:54.56 clocking in the women's 10000. Waldron, who broke the school record in the event in April, finished fourth out of forty-eight to qualify.

Evans, a Stafford, England, product, advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals in the men's 1500 with a 3:54.92 time, which was good for third in his heat. The junior ran consistently in the front half of the tightly raced heat, and managed to take the lead heading into the last turn of the metric mile before finishing third.

Lee, a freshman from West Covina, Calif., raced a personal-record of 10.38 in the men's 100 to secure his place at Thursday's quarterfinals. He was one of only three freshmen to advance.

Six other Lobos also competed in Austin on Thursday. On the men's side, Chaz Lewis placed 34th in the 400 hurdles (52.82), while Richard York finished 28th in the javelin throw (198-1) and Kendall Spencer ended up 38th in the long jump (23-7.5).

For the women, Imogen Ainsworth placed 37th in the 1500 (4:37.45), Josephine Moultrie finished in 38th in the 800 (2:10.80) and Lacey Oeding placed 30th in the 10000 (36:18.53),

On Friday, six Lobos will be competing: De'Vron Walker (men's 110 hurdles), Precious Selmon (women's 100 hurdles), Floyd Ross (men's triple jump), Ty Kirk (men's triple jump), Beejay Lee (men's 100 quarterfinals, men's 200 first round), and Ruth Senior (women's 3000 steeplechase).

The meet resumes Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) with the women's discus. New Mexico action starts with Walker in the 110 hurdles at 5 p.m. (CT) and ends with Senior in the steeplechase at 9:30 p.m. (CT).
