Mountain West conference release - Oct. 7

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Redshirt sophomore Hannah Johnson has been named the Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week for matches played September 30 through October 5. It is the first weekly honor for Johnson and the first of the season for the University of New Mexico volleyball program.

The Lobo setter led UNM to a 2-0 record last week with a sweep at Utah State on Oct. 3 and a 3-1 decision at Boise State on Oct. 5. New Mexico improved to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.

"Hannah had a great week," head coach Jeff Nelson said. "She played outstanding defense, both digging and blocking. She also ran our offense well and guided the team to two important and difficult road wins against very good opponents."

Johnson, a 5-foot-11 native of Longview, Wash., had 79 assists over the two matches, a set average of 11.29, well above her 10.38 assists-per-set average for the season. She helped the Lobos average a .296 (103k-29e-248ta) hitting percentage for the week, well above their .235 season average.

Johnson added 23 digs, nine blocks and eight kills -- averages of 3.29 digs-per-set, 1.29 blocks-per-set and 1.14 kills-per-set -- incredible all-around stats for a setter.

She also recorded her league-leading 10th double-double of the season at Boise State with 48 assists and 14 digs, after nearly recording a double-double at Utah State with 31 assists and nine digs.

Johnson had seven blocks against the Aggies, which tied for the most of any MW player last week in a three-set match; her two solo blocks against Utah State are the most tallied by any league player in a three-set match this season.

The Lobos return to Johnson Center this week for two conference matches starting with MW preseason No. 1 San Diego State (8-6 overall; 3-1 MW) on Thursday and preseason MW No. 3 UNLV (8-6 overall, 3-1 MW) on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. MT.

Thursday night is Res Hall night while Saturday night is Jam Johnson and Lobo League's 25th Anniversary recognition.
