Steady Play Yields Lobo Sweep at Nevada

RENO, Nev. -- The University of New Mexico volleyball team was strong in all parts of its liineup and in all facets of the game on Saturday evening, resulting in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) Mountain West win at Nevada.

The Lobos imrpove to 22-7 overall and 12-6 in MW matches while Nevada falls to 4-25 overall and 2-16 in MW play.

UNM's 22 wins ties the most recorded by a Lobo squad under head coach Jeff Nelson. The Lobos of 2008 also had 22 wins.

Redshirt junior Chantale Riddle led all players with 15 kills and 12 digs, while freshman Devanne Sours added 12 kills.

Redshirt sophomore Hannah Johnson had 32 assists, seven digs and three blocks while senior Miquella Lovato added 15 digs.

The Lobos kep the Wolf Pack out of system with six ace serves -- the most this season in a three-set match.

New Mexico led in every stat category: kills (40-34), hitting pecentage (.284-.145), assists (40-33), aces (6-2), digs (49-35) and blocks (8.0-6.0).

The Lobos return to Albuquerque for their final matches of the regular season starting with a 6 p.m. MT match against Fresno State on Tuesday, Nov. 26 before a 7 p.m. MT match against San Jose State on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Game One - Lobos 25, Nevada 22

The Wolf Pack claimed a 6-3 lead early in the opening set with three kills and a block. UNM continued to trail until an attack error by Nevada followed by a kill from Ross pushed the Lobos ahead, 12-11.

New Mexico held a slight lead until consecutive kills by UNR tied the set at 14-14. The teams then went point-for-point for several rallies with the Lobos pulling ahead, 22-20, off a kill by Johnson followed by a block solo by Gullatt.

The Lobos later pushed to 24-21 off a kill by Sours followed by a smash by Riddle. The Wolf Pack ticked off one more point on a kill by Tessa Lea'ea, but an attack gone long on the next rally by the home team gave UNM set point, 25-22.

Sours and Riddle led the Lobos with three kills each. As a team, New Mexico hit .241 (11-4-29) and used five blocks to hold UNR to .154 accuracy (16-10-39).

Game Two - Lobos 25, Nevada 14

New Mexico opened 7-3 in set two off kills by Riddle and tough serving by freshman Maddie Mayfield. The Lobos ran the lead to 12-6 and 16-8, getting production from all parts of the lineup and in all facets of the game.

UNM had 11 kills on 20 swings and committed just three errors for .400 hitting percentage. Three ace serves were recorded -- one apiece from Ross, Johnson and Mayfield and defensively, the Lobos also had two blocks and 10 digs.

The Lobos closed set two, 25-14.

Set Three - Lobos 25, Nevada 19

Nevada came out of intermission fired up and kept set three close early before pulling away, 11-8, thanks to consecutive kills and a Lobo miscue. The Wolf Pack was flawless at the net for the first half of the set, recording eight kills on 27 swings before committing an attack error.

The Lobos used tough serving and excellent back-court defense to stay close to Nevada before pulling ahead, 16-14, off consecutive kills by Riddle.

New Mexico took off on a 6-1 run a few plays later to run the score to 23-17. A kill by Skipper sparked the run while Ross contributed a kill and Sours added three.

A blocker error followed by a kill from Riddle ended the set, 25-19, and match, 3-0.
