LUBBOCK, Texas -- Despite a strong team effort, the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team couldn’t find a way past No. 19 Texas Tech on Sunday evening.
The Lobos put up a tough fight at the McLeod Tennis Center before falling to the Red Raiders, 6-1.
UNM battled in doubles play and managed to pick up a win in the No. 2 spot. Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers defeated Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde, 8-4. After Natasha Smith and Dominique Dulski fell in the No. 1 spot, the score was at an even 1-1. Unfortunately, No. 3 team Emily Olivier and Susan Baklini wasn’t able to hang on and TTU earned the first point of the match.
“Overall, we battled very hard tonight against a very experienced team,” Head Coach Erica Jasper said. “I thought we had a few chances in doubles at No. 1 and No. 3 that we let slip, but Texas Tech really showed why they’ve been consistently a top 25 team for the last few years.”
The Lobos lost five of six singles contests to the Red Raiders. Freshman Meredith Hopson pulled off the upset against Lynn Kiro in the No. 4 spot. Olivier, Dulski, Bedickova, Blankers, and Smith all came up short against their opponents.
“Meredith Hopson played really well in her singles match and showed great discipline and fight,” Jasper said.
TTU now leads UNM 12-11 in overall match-ups between the two teams.
The Lobos have a big weekend ahead of them as they take on Oklahoma on Fri., Feb. 21 and Utah on Sun., Feb. 23 at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
“We have two more very good opponents on deck next weekend, so we will look to build on this match and be a little tougher next time out,” Jasper said.
