STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of New Mexico was kept scoreless through five innings and Chelsea Anaya pounded out the only hit for the Lobos in 9-0 loss to No. 14/16 South Alabama at Cowgirl Stadium on Saturday morning.
Anaya’s hit came in the third inning, a single to left field that was right over the shortstop. Jasmine Casados and Naomi Tellez were the only other Lobos to reach base. Tellez was hit by a pitch in the first inning and Casados drew a walk a leadoff walk in the second.
USA was on the board in the second with a run. They plated a run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Jaguars finished off the game in the fifth with seven runs.
Carrie Sheehan took the loss in the circle. She allowed seven runs, six earned, off seven hits while striking out six and walking two. Tess McPherson came in the fifth inning with two outs and walk two and recorded the final out of the inning. South Alabama’s Farish Beard recorded the win for the Jaguars, tallying four strikeouts and one walk.
The Lobos drop to 8-18 on the season and will head to New Mexico State on March 19 before hosting their first conference games against San Diego State next weekend.
