EL PASO, Texas -- Freshman Dominique Dulski’s win in the No. 3 singles position helped propel the No. 66 Lobos past UT-El Paso on Saturday afternoon at the El Paso Tennis Club. The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team defeated the Miners 4-3 in their final non-conference match of the season.

“I’m really so proud of the team today,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “We faced a really tough opponent, a tough crowd, and some adverse conditions and were able to take care of business under pressure.”

The Lobos started the weekend with a big win over their in-state rivals, New Mexico State, and concluded their road trip with their victory over UTEP. This weekend’s victories move UNM to 11-6 on the season.

UNM clinched the doubles point in a tightly contested match. Dulski and Emily Olivier won the first doubles match for the Lobos. No. 1 team Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers dropped their match, leaving the point up to Meredith Hopson and Natasha Smith. The UNM duo claimed the point for the Lobos after winning in a tiebreaker in the No. 2 spot.

Things got even tighter in singles play. Bezdickova, Blankers, and Hopson were all defeated by their UTEP opponents allowing the Miners to make a run at the victory.

Fortunately, Smith, Dulski, and Rachana Bhat each tallied a victory to give UNM the match. Smith defeated Gabi Vazquez, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 4 position.

Bhat picked up an easy 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 6 spot. She is now 8-0 on the season in singles play.

Dulski rallied for a victory in the No. 3 spot to claim the match for the Lobos. She is now 9-2 on the season and has won her last seven singles matches.

Dominique Dulski was big for us today,” Jasper said. “She came back from a set down to clinch the match.”

The Lobos kick off conference play next week when they travel to Boise State on March 28 and Utah State on March 30. Full results will be posted on golobos.com.

“I think we learned a lot about ourselves today as competitors,” Jasper said. “I have a lot of confidence that we will continue to build and improve from here.”
