RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada didn’t need the full 14 innings for the doubleheader sweep, taking a 13-5 five-inning first game and an 8-0 six-inning second game from the University of New Mexico softball team on Friday afternoon at Hixson Park.

Nevada had all of the timely hits and the Lobos were playing from behind in both games. After allowing 11 runs in the first two innings, the Lobos were finally on the board in the third, pushing a run across. Shelbie Franc drew a walk and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Mariah Rimmer.

The Lobos kept the Wolf Pack scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and plated four more runs in the fourth to cut the Nevada lead to 11-5. The first three runs of the inning were plated on a three-RBI homer to left from Mia Hignojos, her first on the season. Chelsea Anaya scored off a single from Naomi Tellez for the final run of the inning.

Nevada put up two runs in the fifth to force the mercy rule on the Lobos. Lauren Soles suffered the loss for the Lobos, allowing six runs off three hits while walking four and striking out three.

Brandi Heimburg led the Lobos at the plate going 3-for-3.

In the second game, the Lobos were just searching for hit but Nevada’s Megan Dortch kept them hitless through six innings of play. Dortch tallied five strikeouts and four walks. The Lobos had chances with the four walks but left six on base.

The Wolf Pack scored three runs in the third and fourth innings and forced the mercy rule again in the sixth with two more runs.

Carrie Sheehan went the distance for the Lobos, suffering the loss and dropping to 3-8 on the season. She allowed eight runs of 10 hits while walking four and striking out five.

The Lobos drop to 10-22 on the season and 1-4 in the Mountain West. Nevada improves to 20-13 on the season and 2-3 in the Mountain West. The teams will have tomorrow off. They will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
