Lobos Comeback To Beat SJSU In Extra Innings

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico softball team saw scoreless innings early but rallied hard with a five-run 10th innings for a comeback to beat San José State 9-4 in on Friday afternoon at SJSU Field.

“Our pitching three really well and was backed up by excellent defense,” said head coach Erica Beach. “We had production from all parts of the lineup. “It was great effort and the team shout be proud of how hard they competed.”

The first three innings proved to be a pitcher’s dual between San José State’s Katelyn Linford and New Mexico’s Lauren Soles as the scoreboard was full of zero’s.

The Spartans put a run across in the forth and two in the fifth but the Lobos retaliated with two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. Naomi Tellez led off the inning with a single to the infield. Mariah Rimmer reach on an error and advanced to second, advancing Gabrielle Stacey (pinch running for Tellez) to third. Jasmine Casados came up with a single to right field to score Stacey. Rimmer scored on the next play off a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The Lobos kept the Spartan scoreless in the bottom of the inning and took a 4-3 lead in the seventh off Tellez’s single to left field that scored Brandi Heimburg and Michala Erickson.

San José State tied it up in the seventh to put the game into extra innings. Carrie Sheehan came in to relieve Tess McPherson and pitch three scoreless innings for the win in the circle.

The Lobos won the game in the 10th inning, scoring five runs off four hits. Tellez led off the inning again with a single to right field. Rimmer followed with a single to left field and the two advanced a base on Jordan Sjostrand’s single to left with one out. Mia Hignojos had the game-winning sacrifice fly to right field that scored Tellez. The Lobos followed with four more runs as Rimmer scored on an error by the third baseman and Karissa Haleman came up with her first career homer, a three RBI blast.

The Lobos outhit the Spartans 17-11 with Heimburg leading the way going 4-for-6. Tellez went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and Haleman had three RBIs. Sheehan improves to 4-8 on the season, allowing just three hits in her three innings of work. Soles started and went 4.1 innings with four strikeouts. McPherson went 2.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits.

New Mexico improves to 12-25 on the season an 3-7 in the Mountain West. San José State drops 21-16 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The two teams will match up again tomorrow at 2 p.m. MT at SJSU field.
