REVIEWING THE SPRING

One could say the theme of the Lobo Men’s Soccer team’s spring schedule may have been diversity. Diversity in opponents, levels of competition and locations of matches was met with a new blend of 19 returners that gave the team an exhibition season of growth and improvement.

“This spring was about creating a new identity with our team,” said head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “I am really happy with the effort from our guys this spring. They were cohesive and established an identity of what this team will be like going forward.”

Head coach Jeremy Fishbein and the Lobos punctuated their offseason conditioning with five exhibitions, which included match-ups against three college programs and a pair of professional clubs. UNM took care of business against collegiate competition with a perfect 3-0-0 mark that saw the Lobo attack outscore its opposition ten goals to one.

The three victories were bookended by a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids Reserves of the MLS in Denver and a scoreless draw at FC Tucson of the PDL as New Mexico went toe-to-toe with the professional clubs at their home stadiums. In their match against the Rapids Reserves, the Lobos faced five players who logged time for the Colorado Rapids in their 3-2 loss to Sporting KC the night before. Six players from that Rapids Reserves team would go on to play for the full team in Colorado's following match versus the Vancouver Whitecaps.

“You have to turn the negative aspects of travel into positives,” Fishbein continued. “The guys get to spend a lot of time together. You get to put yourself in challenging environments, and you really develop as a team.”

It was a balanced attack for the Lobos this spring as six different players tallied goals while eight different Lobos recorded at least one point.

LOOKING FORWARD

While the school year is coming to an end, the summer time will see more top-notch training for the program. Various Lobos will play on PDL teams or train with MLS clubs. They are additional chances for improvement against elevated competition.

“They’re opportunities to play and train with great players, get feedback from a variety of coaches and a chance to grow,” Fishbein noted. “Anytime we can put our guys in those types of challenging environments, it’s a real positive.”
