ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque native and incoming Lobo tennis player Michael Tran is preparing to start his college career at the University of New Mexico, but he isn’t finished collecting high school honors quite yet.

The National High School Tennis All-American Foundation recently named Tran to its 2014 Men’s Tennis All-American list. The award is given to the top 40 high school tennis players from around the country and is one of the most prestigious honors given at the high school level.

Tran is much deserving of the award as he had a very successful four years on the La Cueva High School tennis team. He was the New Mexico 5A individual state champion in 2011, 2013, and 2014. Additionally, Tran was the doubles state champion in 2012. He was ranked 28th by the USTA at the end of his high school career.

“La Cueva has won the state title eleven out of the last fourteen years, which shows how fortunate we have been to have a solid group of athletes,” La Cueva’s head tennis coach Dick Johnson said. “Tran is a great player and I am very excited that he is going to play at UNM.”

Tran is one of two new players joining the Lobos for the 2014-15 season.

Additional Information on the All-American Award:

“To be eligible to receive consideration as an All-American tennis player a student/athlete must maintain an above average academic and citizenship record, compete on a high school tennis team, and garner an individual national ranking. To earn an individual national ranking the player must compete throughout the year in sectional, regional, and national tournaments sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association.  A player with a national ranking has a proven match play record that clearly demonstrates he/she has reached the pinnacle of national junior competitions and is one of the premier tennis players in his/her age division in America.”
